Word Choice Says a lot

I am appalled.

As I was reading the news, I read an article on Yahoo entitled, "Supreme Court upholds TV profanity crackdown". I thought that was great and went to read a postive article. It spoke about how the Justices voted 5-4 in favor of restricting profanity used on TV and I thought, "Good."

I realized they'd have the other side's opinion and they spoke of their "constitutional free-speech rights."

It was, however, the very last sentence that is so appalling. It said,

"Writers, artists and directors on the front lines of the First Amendment face continuing pressure to err on the side of the blandness." (Andrew Jay Schwartzman, Media Access Project)

I'm not even going to get into what the authors of the First Amendment were talking about when they put in free speech; that's a topic for another day.

However, are they stating that to not use profanity is to be bland?

How utterly ridiculous!

Gordon B. Hinckley said,

"Those who routinely take the name of God in vain and resort to filthy, crude language only advertise the poverty of their vocabularies, a glaring paucity in their powers of expression, and a flaw in their moral makeup. Civility invites the ability to speak, to converse, to communicate effectively."

Need more be said? I should hope not. It seems rather obvious to me.

Another Round

Well, just when I thought everyone was better, K. woke up sick this morning. Hopefully this will be the end of it!

My Sickies

Just when I think I'll have the time to blog, I get sickies in the house. In situations like these I often say, "The best laid plans of mice and men..." and when I'm with my mom she finishes the quote as I have trouble remembering the ending! :)

Anyway, on Tuesday, S. was sick with a stomach ailment. She only ate crackers, ginger ale, and 1 piece of outside crust from a homemade pizza.

On Wednesday I decided to keep her home so she could regain some energy. She did, but unfortunately I didn't have very much as my allergies were totally knocking me out and the medicine hadn't kicked in yet.

Thursday found Wayne ill and he even called in sick to work. (He rarely does this.) He started to feel better around 11 am, but then got really sick again after dinner.

Friday Wayne woke up sick again and again called in. He decided it was time to go to the Dr.

I also got a call from the school nurse saying J. came down to her office with ear pain and his ears were red and she thought I should take him to the Dr.

I scheduled an appt. for J. for after school as he had a poetry celebration that he very much wanted to attend and has worked on it for a long time. Plus his sister, grandparents and I were all planning on being there.

Long story shorter, Wayne has a really bad sinus infection and is on medication. I am hoping that he will feel better soon.

J. has a very small ear infection in his right ear and a horrible ear infection in his left. They were using words like bulging and red to describe it. He is on medicine for that.

Thankfully we have insurance.

So, I guess now I have blogged, although it certainly isn't what I was planning on writing about!

More to Come Soon!

Hello All!!

By way of explanation...Many, many things have happened in our household over the last few months. This includes a job from John - Wahoo! That one is finished now, but it did consume a lot of time.

I had the time to Blog today and made one post and started another, but alas, my allergies have flared up big time in the past 2 days, which makes me very muddle-headed. (I like the Longman Online Dictionary of Contemporary English definition of the word, by the way.)

I have taken my Zyrtec tonight for the first time this season and hope that it works quickly.

I was told today of another way to help my allergies that is natural, but it will take time. I'm working on it. Hopefully...

Anyway, hopefully there will be oodles of posts in the near future.

The Great Julie Berry!

In late March I went to a book signing. The book?....The Amaranth Enchantment by Julie Berry. I grew up with Julie and let me say that she is incredibly smart and witty and I was excited when I heard that her book was being published. I bought and read the book before the signing. I enjoyed it very much as have many reviewers!

We had a wonderful visit at the book signing.

FIRE!!!

Tonight I was making Wayne a hamburger and baking some Ciabatta bread, when the stove started popping, flashing and then fire came up out of the back! I called for Wayne - who heard the popping and heard me call for him. He didn't know what was wrong and it scared him.

The kids were sent outside, I called 911, Wayne got out the fire extinguisher (it didn't work - it said it was empty). Then he got out the 2nd kitchen fire extinguisher. That one worked.

A guy who is with a different fire district, but lives in this neighborhood came to check and see if we were ok. (That was so nice of him!) He suggested we unplug it and moved it out for us. It arced again, made popping noises again and a fire came up again!

The firetrucks came and they used some cool device that they looked through to check the temperature of the wall and the stove. It was definitely the stove. They helped air out the house, checked the stove, suggested we leave it outside tonight, helped us (not me, that's the royal us!) carry it outside and were very helpful. Thanks!!

I learned that the people who had this house before us didn't clean under the stove as there was a TON of pet hair, and an animal toy. I didn't take a pic of that. Wayne was fabulous and helped clean up. As I cleaned the wall and the floor, he washed all of the dishes including almost everything that was on the shelf.

Now that I've said my piece, I think I'll be able to go to sleep and sleep well (I hope).

Also, by the way, I realize that it doesn't look too bad and that it could have been way worse and that I could have gotten hurt. We were VERY blessed by the Lord.

New (to us) Car

Hi all,

It has been a bit since I have blogged. Things here have been crazy busy (as they are for most families). I have had a job for John and that has kept me rather busy. When I wasn't doing that I was either working on my bedroom (the floor is being put in as I write!), or doing something with the family.

In fact, so much has happened that I had to make a list so that I didn't forget to post anything!!

These will not be in order of occurrence.

On Saturday I was busy working and Wayne told me that he was going to go car shopping. Now, I had told him for a few days that I needed to work on Saturday, so when he asked if I was going, I said no, I had to work. I didn't know that he felt that he should go on Friday and didn't and by Saturday he knew he needed to go out. (I found that out much later.) We had already done research and knew that we wanted either a Honda or a Toyota. We want something that will last. While he was at a Honda dealer, I called a Toyota dealer to get prices for a new Corolla or Camry. (The Camry was a pipe-dream, but they are nice!)

Wayne really liked a blue, 2008 Honda Civic LX. It only has 8100 miles. I told him that he couldn't get anything unless I went to see it. He came down, picked me (and the kids) up (in the Civic). I drove it around. I asked what he thought and he said he thought we should get it as it is a nice car, was the kind we wanted and they gave him the price that he wanted. I felt good about it, so we ended up getting it. (Like you didn't guess this from the very beginning!)

We picked it up on Tuesday night after Wayne got out of work.

Next....we need to save up to replace my van (hopefully in a few years). Then maybe an Odyssey or a Sienna. Anybody have experience with either of those?

So, without further ado.....the much anticipated, not white car!
(The only requirement that the kids had was that it couldn't be white because our last 3 cars were white.)
